Frequently Asked Questions
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin." The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as "whiteware", aluminium extrusions, and automobile and bicycle parts. Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard), to be powder coated using different methods.

What can I powder coat?
Many different types of metals can be powder coated. Steel, aluminum, titanium, magnesium, copper and others can be coated. Parts to be coated must be able to withstand temperatures up to 450 degrees F.
Can you just go over the old coating?
In most cases, the answer is no. We blast all substrates down to bare metal using aluminum oxide, and then start fresh.
Should I galvanize the part for extended corrosion resistance?
If you plan to have parts powder coated, then galvanizing is unnecessary. Galvanized parts can cause problems in the powder coating process, and is blasted off before coating.
I have some old parts that are pitted and corroded. Will powder coating fill the pits in?
No! Powder does not fill in low spots in metal. Cured powder follows the contour of the metal. If you have old parts you want to restore, they need to be sanded, grinded and possibly filled with high temp metal filler. Textured powders will hide pits better than smooth powders.
Can I powder coat aluminum?
Yes! Many people think it is not possible to powder coat aluminum, but it is.
How much does it cost?
Each job is bid separately. There are many factors that go into the cost. If there are parts that need to be removed, or if there are heavy oils or grease that need cleaned, the price will be higher. Some colors are more expensive than others. Larger quantities are cheaper per part. If there is a coating on the part that needs to be removed, that will affect the price, especially if the coating is powder or chrome plating.
Does powder coating add a lot of weight to the part?
Not as much as you might thing. Check out our blog page.
